PALMDALE – No one was arrested for driving under the influence, but 15 people were arrested or cited for other violations at a DUI/ driver’s license checkpoint in Palmdale Friday night and early Saturday morning, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department conducted the checkpoint from 6 p.m. Friday, March 24, to 2 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at 10th Street West and Technology Drive, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The results of the checkpoint are as follows:
- 1,082 vehicles were contacted.
- 14 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license
- One person was arrested for “other criminal charge [23103 CVC]”
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the LASD news release.
“The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads,” the news release states.
Funding for the Palmdale checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

I went through this checkpoint and was asked by the officer any alcohol or drugs? I replied no thank you I have that covered!

You’re right. At 2: 00 am there’s not much else to be doing out there. But it DOES happen. And the greater point of most traffic stops is to expand something minor into a serious criminal investigation. While also picking up a few extra bucks in fines for the city treasurer. But even big hearted “designated drivers” should beware! Because anybody driving around in the middle of the night with a carload of drunk people is difficult for a suspicious skeptic to imagine that they are not drunk as well..

That’s why it begs the question; if they are really trying to catch drunk drivers, why is 2AM the shut down time?
And implies the answer; they are not really trying to catch drunk drivers.

So it’s not a DUI checkpoint, it is a security checkpoint.

Is is odd, they terminate the checkpoint at 2am? Guess they are just looking for Happy Hour participants…..
Tim Scott says
They aren’t actually trying to catch drunk drivers. So no that isn’t odd, it’s expected.
Russ says
Unless you have worked at least one of them, you don’t know.
Tim Scott says
LOL…really? Do you have to dig a grave to know they are supposed to be six feet deep?
Tell me Russ, if they are trying to catch drunk drivers, how come they hardly ever do? This one is a fine example; it got ZERO. That’s a pretty typical result. At least half the time ZERO is what they catch. You imply they are really trying. Do you think they are just totally inept?
Ledesma 99 says
One reason they detected no drunk drivers is partly because drunk driving is in major decline. Most of us simply do not do it. And this is the case all over the world. The fact is most traffic accidents are not caused by DUI but caused by exactly what traffic accidents always were caused by. One driver simply failed to see the other.
Tim Scott says
“Most of us do not do it” might have always been true. The majority of drivers are just going to and from work, the store, whatever.
That doesn’t change the fact that at 2:15 AM the majority of cars on the road are piloted by impaired drivers. But they don’t run checkpoints at 2:15 because they aren’t trying to really catch drunk drivers.

And they don’t start any earlier because they’re all day drinkers themselves.
