Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger announced this week that she has raised $715,000 for her 2024 re-election campaign for Fifth District County Supervisor — far outpacing all other candidates. The announcement comes at the mid-year reporting deadline.
“I truly appreciate the support I have received across the board from our Fifth District community,” Barger said in a news release. “Many of my supporters do not regularly give to political campaigns, which makes reaching this amount at this time all the more special. I am very grateful that so many of our neighbors have invested in our campaign.”
Barger raised $650,000 of her funds from within Los Angeles County, and a majority of her support was from individual donors. She also currently has the most cash on hand of any candidate, with $650,000.
“I have committed my three-decade long county career to working with all stakeholders including business, labor, Republicans and Democrats alike. The support I have received reflects that commitment,” Barger said. “People are tired of partisan politics and just want common sense solutions. I have consistently put people and solutions over party — and I’m proud of that.”
Barger is endorsed by business, labor, and other community groups. A full list of her endorsements can be viewed here. The next finance reporting deadline is Dec. 31, 2023.

Templer says
LA county and it’s supervisors are so disconnected to the Antelope Valley.
Temper says
This supervisor arguably the most powerful in the county does nothing for its constituents. Community concerns take a back seat to big interest, if a community member has an issue with a massive illegal pot grow and all that comes with it, nothing is done. But if that grow infringes on a commercial grow then they’re all in. We have roads that are over a mile long in this valley that have 90+% occupied frontage that remain unpaved. Granny flats and subdivision, full speed ahead. Collect those permit fees gotta keep up with Sun Valley. Can’t let Stevenson Ranch take that from us first. They treat us the way they see us, as nobody’s because we live here. We need a sixth district not an elite from Pasadena.
Ron says
As long as Rexx has nothing to do with a sixth district, I’m all for it. Every candidate he touches is tainted.
Tim Scott says
Just to save some imagination power, the number of supervisors on a county board is set at five by state law.
Templer says
Not true, charter districts are an exception for a reason ie; geographic separation, bodies of water, mountains hence 11 districts in the Bay Area. I think we qualify since by the time working entities like Hazmat, child services and so on seem to lose all faculties coming up the hill.
Templer says
Was there ever a true opposition opponent versus the last two 5th district supervisors, not a chance. Hardly a level playing field when dealing with political elites and special interest. The state auditors office in 2015 clearly established that for some reason the funds just don’t make it up the hill to this valley. And there is some real trickery going on between public works and how asphalt is distributed in this valley.
Tim Scott says
Would require amendment of the county charter, but yeah, could be done. The electorate is pretty heavily tilted against creating more political offices, which would probably make it tough to get it passed.
Magnetlady says
She’s gone too far to the left, IMHO..
Tim Scott says
Sure, but you’d have said that about Mussolini.

The queen of the kid’s table angling for another term. Great.
King Krapper says
I wonder how much Wrecks donated so he an control her like he controls Loa, Bishop, Alacarn, Ohlsen, local judges, PWD board, Lancaster and Palmdale School Boards, AVTA, AVC, AV Hospital, AVEK, AV Fairboard….did I forget anything?
Tim Scott says
There’s probably some more water districts and school boards, plus Wilke, Lackey, and Garcia.
King Krapper says
I forgot them Tim Scott. Thanks for the reminder. Funny how Wrecks used to complain how Ledford controlled Palmdale’s council. I don’t hear him complaining how he controls both councils and every other board and office in the Valley. In addition to being a meglomanic telling untruths and having whacked ideas, he’s a hypocrite too. What a guy.
Iconoclast says
Come 2024, people can vote new people to the Hospital Board, College Board, City Councils in Lancaster and Palmdale and the State Senate. You get what you vote for.
Tim Scott says
Technically, the electorate gets what the electorate collectively votes for. In Lancaster, by keeping turnout down to around 8% and buying about 5% the local power brokers ensure themselves the ability to elect whoever they want. They can’t keep the turnout down as effectively in Palmdale, but they still wield pretty much unbreakable control over the outcomes.
I have social interests that keep me here, but I’d never invest.
Paul says
Lancaster counts on a combination of low turnout overall and high turnout from places like Lancaster Baptist Church. By holding elections in April in off years and having voting booths set up in places LBC, that goal is met every election. Add the that the local power brokers who benefit from the same good old boy network in charge and you have the mess that we call Lancaster.
Vote says
We need new people for sure. Rex has left a stain on the AV that will be hard to remove.

Its interesting that this person, from a VERY wealthy locale (San Marino) is mostly Republican supported, even though a demonstrable paper tiger. She essentially pays lip service to the (R) talking points, but hardly ever fulfills her tough talk.
Why do Republicans keep tossing money down the crapper to support this obvious low performance nabob?
Frank Rizzo says
Nice, she needs re elected
