“Lauren, an esteemed Asian American leader from our community, truly embodies the spirit and values of Lancaster,” Parris said in a news release.
“Her roots in the Antelope Valley, combined with her significant service as a Human Resources Officer in the U.S. Army and her engagement in community activities, gives her a multi-dimensional perspective that we believe will be invaluable on the Council,” Vice Mayor Marvin Crist added.
In addition to her military accomplishments, Hughes-Leslie a strong advocate for Asian American representation. She founded a local non-profit dedicated to empowering young Asian American women by providing them with resources and mentorship opportunities to excel in their chosen fields.
“As Lancaster continues to grow and evolve, the City Council believes Lauren Hughes-Leslie will be an instrumental force, using her vast experiences and genuine passion for the community to guide our City towards a bright and inclusive future,” city officials said in the news release.
Hughes-Leslie was sworn in at the Lancaster City Council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 12. She fills the council seat made vacant by Darrell Dorris, who resigned last month citing the need to focus on his church and family.
