PALMDALE – Avenue Q-6 in Palmdale will be renamed Hammack Avenue in honor of fallen Deputy Richard B. Hammack, who lost his life in the line of duty on May 11, 1992, during the service of a search warrant. The renaming project was approved by the Palmdale City Council on December 6, 2023.
The project is set to encompass about 15 addresses, including both residential and commercial properties within Palmdale city limits. It will be coordinated by the Public Works department, which will notify the United States Postal Service, affected businesses and residents of the change.
“This initiative aligns with our commitment to maintaining a desirable community where everyone wants to live, work, and play,” said Palmdale Mayor Laura Bettencourt. “By commemorating Deputy Hammack through the renaming of Avenue Q-6 to Hammack Avenue, we are not only preserving his memory, but also creating a lasting legacy that the community can take pride in.”
The installation of the new signage is set to commence promptly, according to Palmdale city officials.
Deputy Hammack was assigned to the Antelope Valley Station and served the community for 7½ years as a member of the Narcotics Detail in Palmdale. His legacy was honored with the naming of the Richard B. Hammack Community Activity Center on July 18, 1992. Due to structural issues, the Hammack Center is scheduled for demolition. In light of this, the city elected to pay homage to Deputy Hammack by renaming the section of Avenue Q-6 from Sierra Highway to 10th Street East in his honor.
